"This View of Life": Darwin at the University of Oklahoma
Next year would be the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin and will also commemorate the 150th anniversary of the publishing of On the Origin of Species. To celebrate, as well as educate, the University of Oklahoma is putting on a year long set of activities that revolve around Darwin, evolution, history of science, etc. The events will be aimed at scholars and scientists, students, and the general public.

I plan on attending a few of these activities. If anybody finds any of the events especially interesting, post here so we can get a trip to Norman organized.

I know that I would like to see Dawkins on March 6th.

I have not decided on which other speakers I would like to see. I have only heard of 3-4 of the speakers, so I am not sure how much it matters which talks I attend. It really depends on my schedule, I am sure all of them would be great.

I would love to buy tickets from you ProAss. Do you accept cash?

The following is a message sent regarding the event...I suggest that if you want to go, you should personally email Barry Weaver.

"You're receiving this message because you emailed me expressing interest in Richard Dawkins talk at OU on Friday 6 March.

Admission to the talk is free but will require a ticket. The mechanism for distributing tickets is being worked out, and I will let you know as soon as we have something in place.

Because you contacted me I will guarantee you tickets, with a limit of two per person unless you can make a good case for receiving more tickets.

And thanks for your interest and enthusiasm!"

RE: "This View of Life": Darwin at the University of Oklahoma
H. Allen Orr, from Rochester University will be giving two lectures next week, Wednesday (01/28 @4:30pm) and Thursday (01/29 @ 7:30pm). The title of the first lecture has not been confirmed and the second lecture, titled “Darwin, Evolution, and Design” will be geared toward a more general audience.

I have a doctor’s appointment on the 28th (blocked salivary gland, sorry if that’s TMI) and I will be taking the entire day off. If I am feeling up to it, I would not mind heading down to Norman to check out the first lecture. If I end up not feeling well enough to go out, I would not mind checking out the second lecture (if I am feeling better).

Orr has done a bunch of work in the field of evolutionary genetics and tends to review books about science/religion/philosophy. I am not too familiar with his academic work, but I have seen him and Dan Dennett fight like and Rocky and Apollo (the letter writing version anyway).

If you have a few minutes and a bit of interest, check out these exchanges between Orr and Dennett. They can be quite entertaining. The second set, the ones regarding The God Delusion, are a little bit shorter and less technical.

Orr’s review of Darwin’s Dangerous Idea, “Dennett’s Strange Idea” published in the Boston Review.

Dennett’s response to Orr, “One Fan's Pratfalls” published in the Boston Review.

_____________

Orr’s review of The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins, “A Mission to Convert” published in The New York Review of Books.

Dennett writes a letter to the Editors and Orr replies.

Dennett writes “An open letter to H. Allen Orr” on Edge.org

Orr gives “A Response to Daniel Dennett.”

And then P.Z. Myers chimes in with his take on all of this.

I am thinking about heading to Norman Tuesday, March 24th to see “Ants: Nature’s Secret Power.” Film screening and talk by Wolfgang Thaler and Bert Hölldobler. 7:30pm – SNMONH.

Hölldobler co-wrote The Ants with E.O. Wilson. There is a bunch of interesting stuff to learn about these social insects.

Anybody interested?

Robert Trivers will be at OU November 11.
This guy is bigtime.
I plan on going so if you want to hitch a ride, you have six months to think it over. Wink

RE: "This View of Life": Darwin at the University of Oklahoma
The next two events I plan on attending (feel free to hitch a ride with me if you would like to join):

Tuesday, September 22, 7:00pm
SNOMNH public seminar series “In Discussion with Darwin”:
Has Macro Evolution Been Misunderestimated?

This seminar discussion will focus on the lack of a fundamental difference between micro- and macroevolution (as the terms are commonly used). It will use molecular data to examine the basis of taxonomic groups and explore examples of evolutionary divergence in nature.
Participants will need to pre-register.
SNOMNH Members: $10 per seminar; non-members: $15 per seminar
Contact Deborah Kay: dkay@ou.edu

Monday or Tuesday, September 28 or 29, SNOMHN
Darwin’s Dilemma, an intelligent design film, will debut in Norman OK. After the film, there will be a talk/Q&A with leading ID clerics, Stephen Meyer and Jonathan Wells.

I have not been able to confirm the exact time, but Meyer is giving a talk on the 28th about his new book Signature in the Cell: DNA and Evidence for Intelligent Design in Meacham Auditorium. It is highly unlikely that I attend both the talk and the film, but I will try to make it to one or the other. I think I favor the talk (28th) more than the film (29th).

The latter events are sponsored by the University of Oklahoma IDEA (Intelligent Design and Evolution Awareness) Club.

The intellectual values that are timeless and indisputable: objectivity, truth, factual discovery, soundness of argument, insight, explanatory depth, openness to challenging ideas, scrutiny of received dogma, overturning of myth and superstition.
